Onward + Upward

Hey everyone–little disclaimer: this will be Cross Stitch’s last post. We’d like to thank everyone that’s been with us throughout this project, who’s supported us, read our material, liked our pages and followed along for the ride. You guys have been amazing and we so so SO appreciate everything. We’re going to be pursing different endeavors and we hope ya’ll understand. Onward and upward as they say!

For this shoot, we went to a hiking spot in the area and it was so picturesque that day! Little did I know it was also supposed to be very warm and pants suddenly seemed like a horrible idea.

I’m not usually a printed pants girl anyhow, but I loved these navy and white combo from H&M. It was the first time I’d worn them and had a little trouble picking out a top to go with! I, of course, fell back on my ol’ faithful (read: black) but it grounds the pants and makes them less crazy. (That’s my excuse and I’m stickin’ to it!)

The half-tucked top was a nod to my stylish co-workers, and is definitely a styling cheat I will be using more often. Paired with a long necklace and simple black flats, this is a great every-day outfit when you want to step outside the box and try something a bit bolder than you’re used to.

We hope we’ve inspired you guys to rummage through your own closets and mix and match different styles and separates. Not every thing needs to be the newest of the new and you can often rework old articles of clothing–it just takes some imagination! Style is a form of expression and you shouldn’t be afraid to express yourself!

Sam’s Winter Favorites

I know I said in my Fall Favorites post that I was combining both my Fall and Winter favorites, but because Spring Equinox is this Friday (March 20th), Michelle and I wanted to close out the season with our Winter favorites before Spring officially begins!

Without further ado, my Winter favorites:

1. Sam Hunt‘s Montevallo album. As soon as I heard “Leave The Night On”, I was hooked! Fun fact: Sam co-wrote Keith Urban‘s hit song “Cop Car” which Sam also recorded for Montevallo! If you like Florida-Georgia Line, I guarantee you’ll like Sam Hunt!

2. My burgundy mini mason jar & succulent by Twine & Dandy. If you haven’t bought a mason jar from Twine & Dandy yet, what are you waiting for?!

3. Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Red Dahlia:

(Their Lip Crayons are really nice too!)

4. My white cable knit sweater from Forever 21 & statement necklace from Charming Charlie:

5. My Ella J. “Proud Supporter Of Messy Hair And Sweatpants” sweatshirt! Soooo cozy!

What were some of your favorites this Winter?

Sixty Degrees and Sunny

Sunday brunch downtown? Yes, please! Outfitted for a sunny and sixty-degree weather day in Winter, Sam is dressed cozy in her cable knit sweater and signature black skinnies. Adding a classy touch, she pairs her statement necklace and cute buckled booties to top off the look.

If you haven’t noticed yet, Sam is slowly making statement necklaces her new thing, and I am in full support! Especially this one from Charming Charlie which totally brings out the hazel in her eyes!

How To Wear A Maxi Dress During Winter

Unlike the East Coast, we don’t really get hit hard by Winter here in California. Thus, it’s been about mid-70’s as of late and when you’re over wearing pants (who isn’t), a maxi dress can work! Here are 3 ways Sam styled her basic black maxi dress for Winter:

Because we’ve been so fortunate with our weather, this is the least bundled-up version of the maxi. Which would actually work really well year-round! Layered with a simple flannel, the statement necklace and lace-up boots give the outfit some edge!

Outfit #1 | Maxi Dress: Target // Shirt: Target // Earrings: Forever 21 // Necklace: McCaulou’s // Shoes: Charlotte Russe.

This second combo is GREAT for chilly winter days when you want something fast & easy to wear. Just throw on an over-sized sweater and your favorite scarf and you’re good to go! If it’s not horribly cold, you can get away with flats too 😉

Outfit #2 | Maxi Dress: Target // Sweater: H&M // Scarf: H&M // Earrings: Forever 21 // Shoes: Steve Madden.

This final outfit is pretty much a combination of the first two. The layering of a chambray top, cozy sweater and of course a statement necklace. Any printed or colored button down that contrasts with a neutral sweater is so great because it adds a pop of color. The statement necklace really hones in on the color palette of the look and the booties make it more playful!

Skater Skirting Around Wintertime

We’re proud to finally present the photos taken by our friend and aspiring photographer Sarah Mason-Beaty!

It was a different dynamic this time, with Michelle sitting out and Sarah stepping in. She’s got a great eye for detail and these photos turned out so gorgeous, thank you so much Sarah!

This location is one of our favorites and I’d been dying to wear this textured Forever 21 top I bought not too long ago. Only in California can you wear a skater skirt during Winter! When paired with patterned tights and lace up boots it makes the “cold” seem that much more bearable. As for everywhere else though, please wear pants we know it’s freezing out there! ❤️

Out Of The Woods

We took a little hiatus recently, due to some changes in both Sam’s and my personal life but we’re “Out Of The Woods” now and we’re back!

Happy February everyone! Hope your Valentine’s/Galentine’s Day was lovely!

Since Taylor Swift is practically Sam’s idol, our copy-cat title seemed appropriate. Depending on where you’re located in The States (or anywhere else in the Northern Hemisphere), chances are you’re buried in snow, and we are sending a lot of virtual hot tea and blankets your way. If you’re in California, you’re absolutely loving this early arrival of sunny days! Sam dresses perfectly for this weather by throwing a sweater over a lightweight tee, and is prepped for whatever weather the day holds. Top it off with a super cute felt hat and you’re good to go!

Walk This Way

Can’t blame a girl for titling her blog post after an Aerosmith song, can ya? The yellow arrow at our shoot location was just too good of a set up, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity 😉

Let’s talk about pants. I’m starting to think Sam is moving away from the dark side (aka black skinnies; we’re like a cult) and taking a major liking to denim recently! Twice in a row, girl! I will concede, boyfriend blue jeans are something we should all have a pair of for the impending Spring Season.

Sam’s outfit this week is not only street chic, but her choice in dark colors matched the mood of the gloomy sky, and made her highlights stand out much more than normal!

Hashtag Plaid

If you didn’t wear plaid, did Fall really even happen?

Welcome to 2015, y’all! Despite always occupying a spot in our closets, plaid was definitely a statement piece in 2014 (i.e.: the flannel craze, sorry not sorry!)

Sam’s cozy, brick red sweater ties in with the hues of navy, gold, forest green and burgundy of her plaid scarf perfectly. Throw some cute riding boots and blue jeans into the mix and you have yourself a comfy yet chic outfit! Red lips never hurt anyone either, as Sam is clearly channeling Taylor Swift as of recent!

Notice there’s not any black in this outfit either? *claps*

Sweater Weather

Like to layer clothes but don’t know how to without looking like an eskimo? Then allow me to introduce you to this bright idea! Wearing a collared shirt under a cozy sweater, like Sam demonstrates, is a cute way to stay warm and fashionable in these colder months. Such a simple idea but so easily forgotten about when all you want to do is bundle up in a hoodie. Throw on some lipstick (because who can resist) and you’ve got yourself a put-together look!

Today is also Sam’s 23rd birthday. Everyone wish her a happy birthday! Merry Christmas Eve everyone 🙂
