Onward + Upward

Hey everyone–little disclaimer: this will be Cross Stitch’s last post. We’d like to thank everyone that’s been with us throughout this project, who’s supported us, read our material, liked our pages and followed along for the ride. You guys have been amazing and we so so SO appreciate everything. We’re going to be pursing different endeavors and we hope ya’ll understand. Onward and upward as they say!

For this shoot, we went to a hiking spot in the area and it was so picturesque that day! Little did I know it was also supposed to be very warm and pants suddenly seemed like a horrible idea.

I’m not usually a printed pants girl anyhow, but I loved these navy and white combo from H&M. It was the first time I’d worn them and had a little trouble picking out a top to go with! I, of course, fell back on my ol’ faithful (read: black) but it grounds the pants and makes them less crazy. (That’s my excuse and I’m stickin’ to it!)

The half-tucked top was a nod to my stylish co-workers, and is definitely a styling cheat I will be using more often. Paired with a long necklace and simple black flats, this is a great every-day outfit when you want to step outside the box and try something a bit bolder than you’re used to.

We hope we’ve inspired you guys to rummage through your own closets and mix and match different styles and separates. Not every thing needs to be the newest of the new and you can often rework old articles of clothing–it just takes some imagination! Style is a form of expression and you shouldn’t be afraid to express yourself!

The grass is definitely greener on the other side! Spring is here, and Michelle’s back from her recent trips! Most recently visiting New Orleans, one of her favorite places for its vibrancy and culture. (Hence the colorful new skirt!) She’s even sporting her new bright red lipstick straight from the UK!

There’s something called Red Nose Day in the UK, where every two years people wear a red nose for the day to raise awareness and money to help fund life-changing projects. Why a red nose? To provide comedic relief and entertainment for a good cause! Red Nose Day may have already passed in the UK, but it’s coming to the US for the first time on Thursday, May 21st!

Top: Naked Zebra, McCaulou’s; Bralette: Free People; Skirt: The Impeccable Pig, New Orleans; Shoes: TOMS; Hat: Ella J. Boutique; Lipstick: Kate Moss’ Red Nose Red 01 for Rimmel London.

Spring Dapper Day 2015 | Disneyland

We meet again, dearest Disneyland! As we explained in the Fall, Dapper Day is a bi-annual event at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, encouraging you to embrace your ability to dress up and step out in style!

Sam was unable to attend this year due to a new and exciting job change so Courtney and I attended same as last year, with Ally and Jackie as our Spring dapper dates!

I was inspired to dress with a 60’s go-go dancer in mind after finding both my dress and boots in the same thrift store, first try!

Michelle’s Outfit | Scarf: Ross // Dress: Community Thrift // Tank: Target // Tights: Target // Boots: Community Thrift.

Ally “DapperBounded” as Honey Lemon from the new animated Disney movie, Big Hero Six! Although not pictured, she had a stuffed version of her healthcare companion, Baymax, with her.

Ally’s Outfit | Dress: Vintage from Etsy // Shoes: Keds // Headband: Tasha via Nordstrom // Glasses: eBay.

Jackie’s whole ensemble channeled the 1940’s, almost First Lady status with the red, red lips and pearls.

Jackie’s Outfit | Dress: MkLAREN Boutique // Pearls: Borrowed // Shoes: Borrowed.

Courtney, like Ally, DapperBounded as Joy from the new Disney animated film, Inside Out, premiering later this year!

Courtney’s Outfit | Dress: Pin Up Girl Clothing // Cardigan: Sidecca // Head Scarf: Pin Up Girl Clothing // Earrings: Gifted // Necklace: Borrowed // Shoes: Amazon.

All hair and makeup was done by the lovely Moe Marquez aka #moebeauty. Stay tuned for a special post featuring #comoemakeupandphotos!

And if you missed out on Spring Dapper Day this year, Dapper Day: Fall Soirée at Disneyland is Friday, September 18th!

Highlight: DisneyBound

What is DisneyBounding? I think the best definition comes from the creator of the style sensation herself, Leslie Kay:

“DisneyBounding is a way for teenagers and adults to show their love and appreciation for Disney and play dress up without actually wearing a costume so it takes trendy clothes and bases the outfits after Disney characters.” – Disney Geekery, Interview: Disneybound Explained By Leslie Kay

Essentially, where Disney and fashion collide. I recently took a trip down to Southern California to attend Spring Dapper Day 2015 and with a day in California Adventure before Dapper Day, the gang agreed that we should Disneybound as the Fab Five (four in our case): Mickey and Minnie Mouse as well as Donald and Daisy Duck. With best friends partnered as the iconic duos, we rocked the park in our makeshift outfits!

I DisneyBounded as Mickey Mouse.

Jackie, DisneyBounding as Minnie Mouse.

Allie and Cojo (Courtney), DisneyBounding as Daisy and Donald Duck, respectively.

The Fab Four!

What’s great about DisneyBounding is you take what you already have in your closet and translate it into a Disney character of your choice. Sometimes a little shopping excursion is helpful but otherwise take a look in your closet and see what you can come up with!

If you’re feeling inspired, you can check out some more outfits put together on DisneyBound’s tumblr!

Michelle’s Winter Favorites

“USA Believe” t-shirt by Bring Hockey Back. I am a huge fan of hockey, comfy t-shirts, and supporting small companies, so when I saw BHB released this new design in honor of the 30th anniversary of the “Miracle On Ice” at Lake Placid, I just had to have it!

Lemon Zinger herbal tea by Celestial Seasonings. Being a big tea drinker, Winter or not, I had my work cut out for me when looking for a decaffeinated tea that didn’t make me want to cozy up in bed and I found just the one!

“She will touch the leaf of the apple, and die!” decal by Decalology Designs on Etsy.  Aurora, was my favorite Disney princess growing up so I took to Etsy to find the perfect decal for my Macbook. I ended up custom ordering from Decalology Designs and had a beautiful outcome.

Urban Decay Naked series fountain (shade 3.5 ). I am not your girl when it comes to makeup, I mean except for certain events I successfully avoided it till I was 21! But a good friend taught me the ropes and set me up with this foundation and now I wear makeup every day!

Red Nose Red 01 lipstick by Kate Moss for Red Nose Day. After living in London for four months, I, like many Brits, get stoked when Red Nose Day comes around (although Americans think I’m a little crazy for wanting to wear a red clown’s nose). One of the efforts to raise money for the country-wide fundraiser was a new Kate Moss lipstick and I absolutely love the shade of red!

With Winter now in the past it’s time for me to launch into buying all things Spring, so look out world!

Sam’s Winter Favorites

I know I said in my Fall Favorites post that I was combining both my Fall and Winter favorites, but because Spring Equinox is this Friday (March 20th), Michelle and I wanted to close out the season with our Winter favorites before Spring officially begins!

Without further ado, my Winter favorites:

1. Sam Hunt‘s Montevallo album. As soon as I heard “Leave The Night On”, I was hooked! Fun fact: Sam co-wrote Keith Urban‘s hit song “Cop Car” which Sam also recorded for Montevallo! If you like Florida-Georgia Line, I guarantee you’ll like Sam Hunt!

Sam Hunt Montevallo
2. My burgundy mini mason jar & succulent by Twine & Dandy. If you haven’t bought a mason jar from Twine & Dandy yet, what are you waiting for?!

3. Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Red Dahlia:

(Their Lip Crayons are really nice too!)

4. My white cable knit sweater from Forever 21 & statement necklace from Charming Charlie:

5. My Ella J. “Proud Supporter Of Messy Hair And Sweatpants” sweatshirt! Soooo cozy!

What were some of your favorites this Winter?

Sixty Degrees and Sunny

Sunday brunch downtown? Yes, please! Outfitted for a sunny and sixty-degree weather day in Winter, Sam is dressed cozy in her cable knit sweater and signature black skinnies. Adding a classy touch, she pairs her statement necklace and cute buckled booties to top off the look.

If you haven’t noticed yet, Sam is slowly making statement necklaces her new thing, and I am in full support! Especially this one from Charming Charlie which totally brings out the hazel in her eyes!

Sweater: Forever 21 // Pants: H&M // Shoes: Target // Earrings: Forever 21 // Necklace: Charming Charlie.

50 Shades of…

IMG_3423 IMG_3448 IMG_3455 IMG_3438
I’m totally kidding. Everyone knows we don’t need to read another thing about THAT BOOK because THAT MOVIE is out now. (Clearly neither of us have plans to see it). BUT seeing as Michelle’s look is monochromatic, I’m rollin’ with it!

And oooooh girl! Michelle stepped up her game with this shoot! To be honest, it’s a rare occurrence for me to see her in a dress and though this is a tunic-style dress, it still counts!

Michelle found these really awesome abstract leggings she’s OBSESSED with from Thread Lounge and opted for a more eclectic outfit this week. Though eclectic, she keeps the tones subdued and stays with that aforementioned monotone color palette that really makes her long (and newly dyed) hair pop!

If you haven’t been to Thread Lounge on Valencia Street in San Francisco thus far, we highly recommend it! Super great for unique discounted designer clothing and accessories.

How To Wear A Maxi Dress During Winter

Unlike the East Coast, we don’t really get hit hard by Winter here in California. Thus, it’s been about mid-70’s as of late and when you’re over wearing pants (who isn’t), a maxi dress can work! Here are 3 ways Sam styled her basic black maxi dress for Winter:

Because we’ve been so fortunate with our weather, this is the least bundled-up version of the maxi. Which would actually work really well year-round! Layered with a simple flannel, the statement necklace and lace-up boots give the outfit some edge!

Outfit #1 | Maxi Dress: Target // Shirt: Target // Earrings: Forever 21 // Necklace: McCaulou’s // Shoes: Charlotte Russe.

This second combo is GREAT for chilly winter days when you want something fast & easy to wear. Just throw on an over-sized sweater and your favorite scarf and you’re good to go! If it’s not horribly cold, you can get away with flats too😉

Outfit #2 | Maxi Dress: Target // Sweater: H&M // Scarf: H&M // Earrings: Forever 21 // Shoes: Steve Madden.

This final outfit is pretty much a combination of the first two. The layering of a chambray top, cozy sweater and of course a statement necklace. Any printed or colored button down that contrasts with a neutral sweater is so great because it adds a pop of color. The statement necklace really hones in on the color palette of the look and the booties make it more playful!

Outfit #3 | Maxi Dress: Target // Shirt: McCaulou’s // Sweater: Forever 21 // Earrings: Forever 21 // Necklace: Charming Charlie // Shoes: Target.
